Summer is right around the corner, and now is a good time to stock-up on the sunscreen before that first burn of the season. When you protect yourself and your family by rubbing sunscreen directly onto your skin and over large portions of your body, it might be a good idea to know just what’s lurking in those name-brands we’ve been absorbing into our bodies for years.

Check out EWG’s Skin Deep 2012 Best Beach & Sport Suncreens list. You might be surprised to find that your brand probably didn’t make the cut. In fact, most sunblock brands contain harmful chemicals that are considered potential hormone disruptors.

The Skin Deep website is a great tool for evaluating the skincare products that you and your family use on a daily basis. Products that range from toothpaste to perfume to shampoo are graded based on ingredients and potential harmful chemicals. Don’t forget to ask Dr. G for more information regarding healthier alternatives at your next chiropractic visit!

Since today is World Spine Day, and October is National Spinal Health Month, it seems like a good time to share some tips for taking care of your spine. Your spine is one of the most important structures in your body, functioning to protect your spinal cord, nerves, and internal organs, support your head and neck, provide balance and weight distribution, and facilitate movement. Your spine does a lot of work! And the strength, durability and flexibility of your spine and back is important to maintaining your health. Prevention is the best way to prevent back and spine pain.

1. Stay Active

Your spine was built for movement, so keep moving! And remember, exercise doesn’t always have to be at the gym. If you get bored of the gym, go somewhere else. Ride a bike, walk a hiking trail, go swimming. All of these things keep you moving and keep your spine healthy. If you do go to the gym, make back and core exercises a part of your routine. They are easily forgotten at the gym, but they provide the support your spine needs. Strong spinal and core muscles help prevent back injuries.

2. Nutrition

Proper nutrition and a healthy diet are essential along with exercise, in maintaining a healthy body weight and getting the essential nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to build a strong spine with strong bones. Maintaining a proper weight also reduces pressure on your spine and other joints, such as your knees. An easy way to improve your diet is to cut down on red meat. Instead, pick a day of the week for fish, and a day of the week to be vegetarian. While a vegetarian diet have multiple, benefits, it can be a lot of work to maintain and especially difficult if you have kids, but picking one day a week to be vegetarian is a little easier and 1 day a week for a year equals 14% vegetarian meals, without red meat and saturated fats! That’s a big impact for just one day a week!

3. Spinal Check-ups

You take your car for a tune up when it needs it, and you go to the dentist so you don’t get cavities, it’s time to start taking care of your spine this way. As mentioned above, your spine is one of the most important structures in your body, protecting your spinal cord, nerves, and internal organs, supporting your head and neck, providing balance and weight distribution, and facilitating movement. How many things do your teeth do again? Exactly. Getting regular spinal check-ups to make sure everything is balanced and aligned will help prevent the big problems in the long-run. Eighty percent of people experience back pain at some point in their lives, but it can be prevented.

4. Good Posture

Grandma had the right idea. Sit up straight! Good posture helps keep your spine aligned and prevents loss of the curves in your spine. Most of us live sedentary lifestyles, we sit in the car during the commute, we sit 8 to 10 hours a day at work, we sit down to eat, and then we sit down and watch TV or use the computer. That’s a lot of sitting, even if you are in the small minority that exercises for an hour a day. The discs in the lumbar spine are already loaded three times more while sitting than standing, it‘s an up-hill battle. Proper posture can help you fight for a healthy spine!

5. Good Work Habits

We just went over sitting at work. We do it a whole lot, and it’s not good for your back, but there are things you can do to help. Use your breaks. I know its hard, and you’re busy, but use them! Most people who work 8 hours a day get two 15 minute breaks, and an hour lunch every day. Get up and move around! Take a lap around the office, hit up the water cooler, walk the stairs, or go outside and get a breath of fresh air. Your work will be there when you get back, but you’ll feel much better while doing it. Work on your posture at work, and especially if you use a computer a lot. Ask your chiropractor for stretching and posture exercises that you can do at your desk. Many chiropractors will also do an ergonomic evaluation of your workstation!

6. Quit Smoking

Smokers have a 300% greater incidence of chronic low back pain than non-smokers. Wow! And that’s not all that’s bad, nicotine kills the bone building cells in our body, which is why nicotine substitutes and patches are also bad for your spinal health. Smokers are also poor healers, and according to one study, smoking leads to degenerative spinal disorders and back pain as a result of damaging the vascular structures of spinal discs and joints.

7. Proper Lifting Techniques

Many back injuries are the result of improper lifting techniques, which can put the low back in poor position and strain muscles, lock up spinal joints, and cause disc bulges/herniations. We’ve all heard the phrase “lift with your legs,” but here are some more instructions that will help you the next time you go to pick up your kids, or lift that giant super-saver case of water.

Bend with the knees

Keep your chest forward

Lead with your hips

Keep your shoulders in line with your hips

Keep the weight close to your body (Click for Images)

8. Supportive Shoes

The ladies are the worst offenders here. Yes, I know those high heels are beautiful, but save them for special occasions. They’re not for walking around all day, and they make you lean forward, changing your center of gravity, which changes the pressure on your spines and joints. Its important to wear comfortable shoes that cushion the impact of your weight on the ground, and support the arches of your feet.

9. Proper Sleep Positioning

Since we spend a lot of time sleeping, proper positioning and support is important because we want our spine to get the proper rest it needs, and to open the spaces between our discs to allow blood flow to come in and provide the nutrients our spine and discs need. Make sure you have a firm mattress, that will keep your spine aligned while in the side-lying position. Soft mattresses that you sink down into can bend your spine into the wrong position, irritating muscles and causing back pain. Also, the best sleeping position is laying on your side, with a pillow supporting your head, keeping it in alignment with your spine, and a pillow tucked between your knees to keep your low back in line.

10. Don’t Wait

It’s easy to put things off until it’s too late. Make sure you get the little problems checked out, before they turn into chronic problems and require more treatment. If your back feels tired, weak, or fatigued during activities, this is a sign that you are developing a problem. When your spine and the muscles around it are weak, injuries happen. Your muscles tense up and spasm in order to try to protect the spine from injury. Don’t hesitate! Make an appointment with your chiropractor who will make sure everything is aligned and OK, and will give you exercises and stretches to prevent future injuries. You are in control of your health!

Every year around this time I see lots of little people-shaped Leaning Tower’s of Pisa waiting for the school bus in the mornings. I see tiny kids with monster backpacks that most adults should be afraid to use. Kids have bad enough posture as it is! Have you ever seen one trying to bend forward and walk or run with one of these monster backpacks on? It isn’t pretty. And it can lead to problems that bother them today, or years down the road.

Some of the problems associated with heavy backpacks are:

Spondylolysis (spinal stress fractures)

Apophysitis (growth cartilage inflammation)

Nerve Damage

Poor Posture

Neck sprains/strains

Shoulder sprains/strains

Headaches

Back pain

What Can You Do to Keep Your Kids Out of Pain?
The American Chiropractic Association offers the following tips to help prevent the needless pain that backpack misuse could cause the students in your household.

Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders, by the straps.

The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.

A backpack with individualized compartments helps in positioning the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child’s back.

Bigger is not necessarily better. The more room there is in a backpack, the more your child will carry-and the heavier the backpack will be.

Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps. Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, as well as low-back pain.

Wide, padded straps are very important. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child’s shoulders.

The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. Straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably and cause spinal misalignment and pain.

If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child’s teacher. Ask if your child could leave the heaviest books at school, and bring home only lighter hand-out materials or workbooks.

Although the use of rollerpacks – or backpacks on wheels – has become popular in recent years, the ACA is now recommending that they be used cautiously and on a limited basis by only those students who are not physically able to carry a backpack. Some school districts have begun banning the use of rollerpacks because they clutter hallways, resulting in dangerous trips and falls. (http://www.acatoday.org/content_css.cfm?CID=65)

Chiropractic Care Can Help…
If you or your child experiences any pain or discomfort resulting from backpack use, call your doctor of chiropractic. Doctors of chiropractic are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and will use a gentler type of treatment for children. In addition, doctors of chiropractic can also prescribe exercises designed to help children develop strong muscles, along with instruction in good nutrition, posture and sleeping habits.

In brief, gluten is a protein found in foods that are processed from wheat, rye, barley, and malts–it’s what makes all of our favorite baked goods chewy. A gluten-free diet is a diet that eliminates these foods. Why? Well, there are a number of health benefits that can be achieved by cutting these foods out of your diet. Recent research suggests that there are millions of Americans with undiagnosed gluten sensitivity or allergy, with a variety of symptoms ranging from stomach pain and bloating to fatigue and joint pain, even skin problems or vitamin deficiencies. Many people have been able to reduce or eliminate these symptoms completely by changing to a gluten-free diet.

For more information on this diet, the symptoms of gluten sensitivity, and a list of foods that contain gluten, gluten free foods, and local Jersey Shore grocery stores with large selections of gluten-free foods, check out the Gluten-Free Diet article.
Remember, before changing to a new diet, you should always speak with your primary healthcare provider or a registered nutritionist to see if that diet is right for you.

You don’t have to pay for a flu shot in order to avoid being sick. Here are some free natural tips and healthy habits that can help most people avoid getting sick.

Rule Number One is to lead an active lifestyle with a healthy and nutritious diet. Grandma was right, fruits and veggies go a long way towards keeping the doctors away!

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Many germs are transmitted this way.

Avoid coughing/sneezing into your hand, the crook of your elbow is better if you don’t have a tissue. It is important for kids to learn this. They touch EVERYTHING, so when they sneeze or cough into their hand, it’s going to get on everything/everyone else. Yuck!

Wash your hands frequently: before you eat, before you leave the gym, when your kids get home from school, after you touch something dirty.

Use disposable paper towels/bath tissue to dry your hands. Towels and rags are breeding grounds for germs.

Don’t eat while driving, it’s unsafe and your steering wheel is full of germs.

if someone coughs or sneezes in close proximity, turn away.

Wash toys with soap and water.

Take your vitamins in addition to eating plenty of fruits and veggies.

Drink plenty of fluids, but don’t share glasses/bottles.

Get plenty of sleep, if you feel run down, take a nap to recharge so you don’t weaken your immune system and open yourself up to getting sick.

Did you know that regular chiropractic adjustments help boost the immune system and facilitate healing? Visit the office if you are feeling under the weather. Chiropractors can also help with sinus trouble, congestion, and headaches.

Come in after you’re sick too. Repetitive coughing can tighten and strain throat, neck, and back muscles and put your body out of alignment.

Open windows to circulate fresh air (weather permitting)

Replace your kitchen sponge often, and put it in the dishwasher or microwave for 30 seconds (while wet—be careful it may be very hot when you take it out).

Replace your toothbrush after you’ve been sick.

Avoid touching public surfaces that are prone to have a lot of germs.

Use your forearm to open doors instead of your hands when possible.

Don’t use your finger to push an elevator button, they rarely get cleaned. Use your knuckle or the side of your hand.
